Out
early
from
the
accomodations
at
Highland Springs Resort,
inspecting the grounds
(partially thwarted by a day camp in session,
go figure),
down
10
towards
Calimesa
and
Redlands
for
yet
another
John Browning encounter,
now solo,
at Augies,
good times,
returning
on
10
East
and
Highland
Springs
North
to
the
Resort
and
Carol,
then
off
again,
with
all
due
speed,
supply
stop
in
Northwest
San
Bernardino,
up
the
deceptively conjested
Cajon Canyon
(Google Maps does not predict future situations),
making a break for it
across on 138 past Mormon Rocks,
up to Mountain Top,
into
Los Angeles County -- Llano,
Pearblossom, Littlerock, Palmdale,
Lancaster --
then north beyond,
into Kern on 14: Rosamond,
Mojave,
lateralling
onto
58,
up
past
Cameron and
Sand Canyons
to
Tehachapi Pass
and
Valley,
down Canyon
towards Keene,
off
at
Caliente Junction,
across Bealville
and
other crossings,
Caliente-Bodfish
to
the
Y.
What's this? Closed? Perhaps. So it seems safer to proceed up Oiler Canyon
(enough
petrol?
suffient
coolant?)
and
down into
Walker Basin,
where Carol's
friends at
Rankin Ranch beckon,
meriting a brief stop for a
visit
on the
palatial
grounds.
Onward.
The
roadway is
blocked again at Piute Mountain,
but this time,
from the assurance of fire personnel we are safe to continue
(after all, this is the only other road into the community).
Down to the school and Handy's Corner,
lunch
at
Twin
Oaks
General
Store,
reversing
course to east on Back Canyon, indeed flood damage at Weavor Creek (and hence downstream from this point all the way through the Caliente drainage),
arriving safe and sound at
Michele and Steve's
viewful promontory for
dinner and good times.
High home down 12 to 96, 151st day of summer (49 and 86 days respectively at-or-beyond 90 / 80) --
local temps: 92, Highland Springs / 102, living up to its name in Caliente.
